New Service Pricing at G & O

New service pricing at G&O Family Cyclery

effective for all bikes dropped off after July 1, 2021.

We are announcing the first major step in restructuring of our price system with goals:

  • we want to better serve our riders,

  • communicate more clearly and accurately the scope and cost at the beginning of the service,

  • increase offerings and incentives of preventative maintenance,

  • and make sure we are running a business that is sustainable in the long-term for both customers and staff.

New packages

We are now only offering four package services:

  • Mini / Kids Tune: We are experimentally introducing a smaller package for kids bikes, low-mileage annual checkups, and peace-of-mind checkups after crashes or before a trip.

  • 60-Day Tune: this the free “early break-in” and manufacturer warranty service on bikes we sold.

  • Tune Up: this package is tailored to encompass what most regular services need. It now includes more brake work. The reality our riders experience is electric cargo bikes in a hilly city like Seattle need more frequent brake work so our package has been tailored to that.

  • Overhaul: This is now a traditional overhaul and includes nearly all labor for stripping the bike down and putting it back together. We’ve also included more debug time in this package to make the ceiling cost for big investigations more predictable.

We will no longer be offering a discounted tune-up for single passenger bikes. We have catered our shop space, scheduling, expertise, and inventory to service electric cargo bikes, so it makes sense to cater our service menu to match. Earlier this year we phased out the 15% off labor with a new bike discount as well. We value getting to know your bicycle through servicing it consistently, though we found consistently discounting our labor to be an administrative challenge and unfairly devaluing our own work. We will continue to honor that discount for individual bicycles purchased under that agreement until their expiration.

Price increases and system changes

Due to - gestures vaguely at the world - the rising costs of living, manufacturing, and shipping, we also have raised the price of labor on most individual a la carte services. Price increases are inevitable with inflation, the current state of the world, but also we are always striving to improve our systems and the quality.

With the pandemic and as our operation has shifted away from while-you-wait service, we have been striving to improve our procedures: how your bicycle gets checked in, how we communicate to you about what it needs and what you would like it to do for you, what other things you could be doing to get the best out of it now and in the long term. A huge amount jace’s and Jenna’s time are spent now working hard to track down and keep in-stock the parts required for the bikes we specialise in. This lets us fix your bike more effectively and more quickly. We are continuing to work on bringing down turnaround times once the bike arrives in the shop, as well as to shorten the wait time for appointments.

Last year we also implemented having a second mechanic complete an overall safety checklist on full services before we send the bicycle out the door. This adds an extra step to our service process, but it increases our confidence in the work we are sending out while still admitting we all make mistakes sometimes, and allowing us to learn from them.

Lastly, in our dedication to transparency, as of mid 2021 our most junior employee makes $18.54/hr. We are dedicated to hiring in full-time non-seasonal positions and we offer health insurance for all employees working at least 24 hours per week. The reality is, even our $18/hr starting salary is not a living wage in Seattle, and we are committed to raising staff wages further. We are constantly working to make sure this is as safe and sustainable a career as possible for the employees and appreciate your support in making that a reality.
